The Great Outdoors

Imagine everything that you might want to do in Canada and Clearwater can probably offer it to you! The activities are endless in our neck of the woods. Every season brings a new selection of activities and something to look forward to. Cross country skiing, back country skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding, hiking, canoeing, rafting, kayaking, wildlife viewing, an abundance of camping, horseback riding and more. In Clearwater, you are pretty much just moments away from an astonishing number of activities whether it be a quick swim or hike along the river to a full day of adventure in Wells Gray Park or the surrounding areas.

The Clearwater River is famous for its ever changing landscape. From exciting white water to gentle boat trips, it’s a haven for kayakers. Kayaking classes and trips are available (www.liquidlifestyles.ca) as well as exceptional white water adventure offered by Interior Whitewater (www.interiorwhitewater.bc.ca) or Riverside Adventures (www.riveradventures.ca). Riverside Adventures also offers a trip back in time and experience with an old style 26 foot Voyageur canoe used by the Canadian fur trade.

For fishing enthusiasts, Wells Gray Country offers some excellent fishing especially for the fresh water Rainbow Trout, well known for its fierce fighting power.  Highway #24, known as the Fishing Highway, is only just down the road and opens up some spectacular locations.

Clearwater and Wells Gray are also famous for the multitude of hiking opportunities in the area. From short one kilometer trails to all day hikes to the more remote backcountry trips, you will find hundreds of kms to explore.  Meander the trails that run beside the Clearwater River or challenge yourself in the alpine.  Between the end of June and mid-August, the wildflowers abound in the subalpine meadows of Trophy Mountain. It’s an easy 2 km walk or for a longer walk, there are lengthier trails that lead from the meadows to views of the Shuswap Highlands.

In addition to its famous waterfalls, Wells Gray Park is also known for its two large pristine lakes, Clearwater Lake and Azure Lakes, the ideal setting for canoeing or kayaking and a favourite camping spot for locals and visitors alike. Try canoeing and kayaking  on these lakes as a means to explore the park and stay at one of the eleven wilderness campsites. Murtle Lake, also part of Wells Gray Park, is world-famous as the largest canoe-only lake in North America and admired for its stunning beauty. The north and west arms are approximately 20 km long, and the lake averages three kilometres wide. A special place indeed!

There are a number of very active equestrians in the area all very willing to greet new people to the valley!  Bring your own horse or perhaps just enjoy the area by joining a guided trip. In May and June, you can even experience a real cattle drive!

For our golf lovers, Clearwater offers two lovely local courses. The Wells Gray Golf Resort rests just before the entrance to Wells Gray Park and its 9 hole course has the astounding beauty of the Trophy Mountains as a backdrop while you play. Lacarya Golf Course is just 5 km south of Clearwater and offers a challenge to the advanced players or just the pleasure of being outdoors for the more leisurely player. Lacarya has a super club house with a fun group of people.

But this is only the beginning! There’s even more than this to enjoy in Clearwater!  Mountain biking, hockey, curling, ice fishing, down hill skiing on our local mountain as well as great evening activities like ball room dance classes, jazz classes and several activities geared towards families like Girls and Boys Scouts, evening badminton, yoga, karate and a wide selection of educational courses as offered by the Community Resource Centre.

It’s a commitment to quality and comfortable living without the stress and rush of larger urban centers. Clearwater is a place to discover your interests and enjoy the company of your neighbors. Raise a family, volunteer at the school, get excited by the energy of young budding hockey stars or listen in wonder as students join to master the art music. Look forward to Saturday mornings at the local farmers market and mark your calendars for the community dances at the ski hill lodge. It’s friendly here and so much to choose from. We hope you might spend some time and come see us!
